Starting something from scratch can be overwhelming and may be tiring. Sewing is easy to start after understanding the basics. But many people who learn without a trainer can get confused from what type of projects they should start. In order to help those learners here are some easy techniques and projects to start.


How To Sew A Button

Buttons are commonly used in sewing projects. It is better to learn how to sew a button before you need it. There are two major types of buttons

  1. Flat Button.These are commonly used button and have 2 or 4 holes in centre
  2. Shank button.They have no whole on front but an extended part at back. That extended part has a hole to sew.

How To Sew A Flat Button

It’s very simple to sew on a flat button. It only takes 2 minutes to sew a button. For how to sew on a button you’ll need:

Needle: Make sure that needle size is suitable to pass through the holes of your button. The needle should also not to be too thin as it has to pass through the fabric many times.

Thread: Any sewing thread with suitable color according to dress and buttons. Sometimes it’s better to use similar color and sometime contrast thread look good on button.

Button: Buttons should be chosen according to the place. For baby dresses and crafting projects colorful buttons are required. For shirts mostly matching color button are used.

Steps to sew buttons:

Step 1: Thread the needle with suitable color thread and make a knot at very end

Step 2: mark the place with chalk where you want to sew the button

Step 3: Hold the button on marked place carefully

Step 4: Bring your needle up from any one hole of the button through the fabric under it.

Step 5: Keep on bringing the needle up and down through the holes of the button and fabric. You can make any pattern of these stitches.

Tip: It’s better to pull two or three times from every hole. It will give a better look as well as strength to button.

Step 6: Now pull the button and wrap thread around it clockwise for 4 to 5 times to make a shank. It is done to give some extra space for other piece of fabric to fit in. If this is not made, the buttons can detach because of continuous stretch of other fabric.

Step 7: Tie off the thread after pulling it down to the wrong side of cloth.

TIP: If you have to sew on buttons in line horizontally or vertically than it is recommended to mark all places with pencil or chalk  for all buttons before starting to sew. It will keep equal space between buttons and line will be straight.

How To Sew A Shank Button

This type of buttons has some design or shape without any hole on top. A metal or plastic loop on down side is used to sew. Sewing a shank button doesn’t have so many steps but it’s not simple to sew them. For a beginner it can be tricky to sew a shank button without destroying the appearance.

Shank buttons need to be attached using small equal stitches. The stitches shouldn’t be stretched enough to make buttons strong without tilting on one side. Stitches should not be loose. This difficulty does not mean to avoid using shank buttons. Shank buttons give very formal beautiful finish to any dress. Just doing a little practice can make someone perfect in sewing shank buttons.

How To Sew A Button On Pants

Sewing buttons on pants are not much different from sewing buttons on shirts or other dresses. However few things needed to be considered. First, Buttons on pants hole more pressure than any other place. These buttons also bear so many sit stand movements etc. So these buttons need to be stronger to stay longer.

You can find special button thread from market to make a strong sewing for button. Second, as pants’ fabric is mostly thick so the needle should be strong accordingly. Another thing to consider is, if you are going to sew button on belt than be careful regarding fitting. Following are the steps to sew button on a pant

Step 1: Mark the appropriate point for placing the button

Step 2: Place the button on the mark.

Step 3: Pull thread through needle and make a knot at the end.

Step 4: Working from wrong side of cloth, take one small stitch on wrong side and then pull the needle on front side plus any one hole of button. Repeat the process many times so that all the holes are attached to the fabric in any of following pattern.

Step 5: Pull the needle from one whole and make some circles around the button. These circles will create a space under button to adjust the other side of fabric.

Step 6: Pull the needle down to wrong side of cloth and make a knot by some stitches from existing stitches.

Step 7: Cut the thread after ensuring that thread is knotted strongly.

How To Sew A Bow Tie

Sewing a bow tie could be a first step for a beginner toward machine sewing. You will need

  1. Sewing machine
  2. Pencil/chalk
  3. Iron + Iron stand
  4. Cloth 1/4th yard will be enough
  5. Pattern
  6. Scissors
  7. Matching Thread
  8. Pins
  9. 1/4 yard Interfacing

Get a pattern for bow tie from internet and take its print. For example take this one

Step 1: Iron your fabric and then Place the pattern on wrong side of cloth and trace it by using pencil or chalk. Cut 4 pieces of cloth and 2 from interfacing.

Step 2: Place the interfacing over the cloth and attach it by pins. Now iron the interfacing to make it stick to the cloth pieces.

Step 3: Now you have 4 pieces in total, two pieces of fabric with interfacing and two without interfacing.

Step 4: Take one piece of cloth with interfacing and one without and sew both together by keeping 1/4 seam allowance. Do the same with other two pieces.

Step 5: Now it’s time to turn the pieces. It may be little technical for first time. But if u understands the technique it will help in many future projects too. Holding the piece of cloth in hand make small cuts on seam allowance.

Step 6: Pop out one closed edge of piece and use a stick to push it out toward open end.

If you don’t have a stick use any stick like object that does not have sharp edge. When you succeed to push both pieces turned out and the right side comes out press both pieces neatly. Take care of edges and corners.

Step 7: Now you have two similar pieces with open end one side Like this one

Sew the open ends like it’s shown in following picture.

Your Bow tie is ready to wear :-).

How To Sew A Pillow

Pillows are a good addition to any room or sitting area. They are very easy to sew and very to decorate by adding simple laces or cuttings of different colors. Before starting to sew a pillow it is better to wash the cloth in plain water and let it dry. Some fabrics shrink after first wash so if u will sew unwashed cloth its measurement may change after first wash. For pillow you will need sewing machine, 1/2 yard of fabric for one pillow, measuring tape, scissors, filling and any button or laces that you may want to add.

Here are the steps to sew a pillow

Step 1: Cut the fabric according to requirement. Here is a key for sizing square pillows. Cutting size should be

Length= (required pillow size*2)+3″                         Width= (required pillow size+1″).

For example if you want a pillow of 20 × 20

The length of cutting will be 20 × 2=40 +3= 43 and width will be 20+1=21

Step 2: lay the fabric on iron stand. fold the corners of long sides 1/4 inch and press it firmly and then sew on it first.

Step 3: Now fold the cloth by keeping wrong side. These two sides (that were fold in beginning will be overlapping in middle of square.

Step 4: Sew this square on open sides. Left the over lapping folded ends open.

Step 5: Turn the pillow from open and press neatly by popping the corners out.

Step 6: Stuff the filling inside the pillow

Step 7: Pillow is ready to use. If you want to decorate it with laces, put the laces before step 4.

How To Sew A Pillowcase

Sewing a pillowcase is very much similar to sewing a square pillow. All the material will be same and steps will be the same. Only measurements will be different.

Step 1:

Cut 1 piece that is 27” x 40” to make the body of pillow case

Cut 1 piece that is 9” X 40” Coordinating fabric

Cut 1 piece that is 2” X 40” to make a contrast border

Step 2: Fold the border piece in half and press it

Step 3: Sew it on one side of coordinating fabric. Be careful to match the length on both sides. Better to pin both pieces before sewing.

Step 4: Attach other side of coordinating fabric with body of pillowcase.

Step 5: Now place the fabric like shown in picture and sew on both long sides.

Step 6: Turn the pillowcase to right side and insert filling after pressing this.

How To Sew A Quilt

Sewing a quilt can be a fun project for beginners and crafting project for intermediate. Sewing a simple quilt will help in learning creativity in sewing. You can start from buying some nice colorful pieces of fabric. Decide the required size of quilt. In start better to choose a simple pattern like square pattern. Prewash your cloth and dry it before starting the work.

You will need

  • Fabric pieces to make front
  • one single color fabric for back of quilt
  • batting to layer the quilt
  • Sewing machine with accessories
  • Measuring tape and different color threads

Step 1: Press the fabric pieces and Cut them in equal squares and place these pieces on a flat surface to know the size and make a sequence. Keep in mind the seam margin.

Step 2: Start making rows. Sew two pieces together on one side. Then attach one more square and then one more. Sew all the rows first then Press them carefully. After pressing attach the rows with each other. Keep your work organized otherwise you can make mistakes and your color scheme or pattern may suffer. After attaching the rows press this quilt front one again.

Step 3: Now cut the batting according to the size of front. Also cut the fabric for back. It’s recommended to keep batting and back larger than the front. Cut both 2 to 3 cm larger than front.

Step 4: Sew the batting and front pieces together. If it’s difficult to hold you can stick the batting layer with front by using some sticking glue. It’s key to start from middle of the cloth and make stitches outward. You can follow any pattern but try to make the stitches look good as well as bind the batting strongly.

Step 5: Cut a border for quilt to give it a neat look. 2 inch border will be sufficient. Cut 5″ wide, long piece (long enough to cover 4 sides. sew the pieces to make a long border) from fabric and press it then holding the front and back, bind the sides with border.

Step 6: Wash the quilt before using to give it a fluffy look or you can use unwashed too.

How To Sew A Zipper

Sewing a zipper is one of basic technique in stitching. There are so many places where a zipper is required like clothes, pillows, purses etc. So it is good to practice it.

Step 1: Fold and press the two sides of fabric on which you want install the zipper. For more neatness over lock inside edges or sew it.

Step 2: Place the zipper on fabric and pin it to right place where you want to attach zipper.

Step 3: Sew a line around the zipper to attach it finally. Stitching line should be neat and equal both side with neat corners.

How To Sew A Skirt

There are many ways to make a skirt. Start from simplest method and then you will understand the basic measurements and sewing of skirt. For the simplest pattern you will need elastic 2.5″ wide and fabric. Choose any fabric for making your skirt .To make a casual skirt choose a soft fabric and to make a formal skirt choose stiff cloth.

Step 1: Take the measurements for your skirt. Use a soft measuring tape and measure your waist, hips and the total length required.

Step 2: Cut two large rectangles from fabric according to your measurements.

Step 3: Sew both sides of cloth. Turn the lower edge of fabric.

Step 4: Cut the piece of elastic 1.5 inch less than your waist. If your waist is 32″ the elastic should be 30.5

Step 5: On top edge you need to make a casting for putting in elastic. Fold the fabric according to the width of elastic and press it.

Step 6: sew the presses area and slide in the elastic. Sew the ends of elastic together.

You can find the patterns of different skirt styles. Follow them carefully to practice variations in skirt styles.

How To Sew A Dress

After learning the basic techniques of sewing it’s easy to try some basic dress patterns. One can find many free dress patterns by searching on “how to sew a dress” on internet. Making a dress is a longer project as compare to sewing a pillow or a bow tie. It may take more than one day and take much care to have neat outcome.

Steps for easy to make dress for beginners are given here. You will need

  • 1 3/4 yard of knit fabric
  • Dress pattern downloaded from

(Add half inch seam allowance in pattern)

  • Sewing machine, matching threads, scissors and tailors chalk

Step 1: wash and dry the fabric

Step 2: Cut two 20.5″ x 34.5″ rectangle pieces of fabric for making the skirt.

cut other pieces according to pattern.

Step 3: keeping together sew the two shoulders with right side facing.

Step 4: Lay down this bodice flat, and now sew the sleeves in their place. If u want to make it look more fine, Add some lace on outer edge of sleeves.

Step 5: Starting from the bottom corner of a sleeve sew the two sides of sleeves and bodice together and similarly sew other two sides together.

Turn the stitched bodice to right side and hem the edges of the sleeves and the neckline. You can add any lace at this point of stitching your dress.

Step 6: Fold 1″ and hem the bottom of long edge of the skirt. Add any lace if you want. Now sew the two edges of skirt pieces on shorter sides together. Baste stitch the top of the skirt and gather it. Pin it to the bodice at right place and sew the skirt to the bodice.

As you saw above, there are a lot of sewing projects for beginner. Make sure that you understand all basic techniques before starting next level like sewing a dress.

Trying a complex project at early stage without any supervision can be a waste of time and possible end with disappointment. Better to start from home decor projects (Pillows, cushions, runner, wall hangings etc) then try some baby dresses and then go for intermediate projects.
